After quite a bit of looking, I saw an elderly couple walking in the opposite1 direction. Hurriedly I asked them where exactly Wuthering Heights was.When the old man pointed it out for me, I couldn’t help gasping with discouragement, for that solitary2 manor house looked so remote, so easy to look at yet so hard to reach.

The old man saw that I looked somewhat crestfallen3, so he immediately encouraged me: “Just walk another hour, lad, and you’ll be there.” How could I turn back in front of elderly foreigners? I had no choice but to grit my teeth and press forward.

好不容易看到了一對老夫婦從反方向散步回來，趕快問他們咆哮山莊究竟在哪裡，老人指給我看，我不禁倒抽一口冷氣，因為那座孤伶伶的農莊看起來遙遠得不得了，可望而不可及，老人看我有點心虛，立刻鼓勵我，「年輕人，再走一小時就到了」，在洋老人面前豈可退縮，我只好硬著頭皮向前走去。
